Speaker to talk on ESL learning

STOCKTON - University of the Pacific will host a discussion on the best ways to teach children whose primary language is not English at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Benerd School of Education, Room 208.
The featured speaker will be Vanessa Gomez, a Pacific graduate who received last year’s New Teacher of the Year award from the Lammersville School District.

Language of money translates well for ESL

Abbotsford Community Services received more than half a million dollars this year to continue providing English-language training to the growing number of immigrants coming to this community. “The funding expands our capacity,” said Manpreet Grewal, manager of the ACS immigrant services. Abbotsford MLAs John van Dongen and Mike de Jong presented Grewal and Corinne Vooys, ESL supervisor, with a cheque for $579,736 for the one-year contract on Friday.

FORT WORTH—The 2008 Texas Baptist Ministry Awards honored a long-tenured small-church pastor, a pioneer in ministry to the mentally disabled and a leader in teaching English to adults.

Baylor University and the Baptist Standard presented the awards during the Friends of Truett Seminary Dinner, held in conjunction with the Baptist General Convention of Texas annual meeting in Fort Worth.

This year’s honorees were Bill Wright, pastor of First Baptist Church in Plains; Joel Pulis, founding pastor/executive director of the Well Community in Dallas; and Robin Feistel of Nacogdoches, longtime English-as-a-Second-Language teacher and author of a new ESL training program.

HRC Fiesta Raises More Than $90K For ESL Programs

(November 13, 2008) While the forecast for the economy is gloomy, it did not deter nearly 300 supporters from attending the Hispanic Resource Center’s annual fundraiser on November 6 at Hampshire Country Club in Larchmont.

This year’s Fiesta celebrated the Center’s 10th anniversary of helping newly arrived immigrants integrate into the community. As part of the festivities, the HRC’s president, John Gitlitz, and executive director, Mariana Boneo, presented the Amigo Award to the teachers of its English as a Second Language program for “helping everyone speak the same language.” Read More…
