Lariat News - A total of 80 percent of the 2.6 million enrolled in California’s community college system require some type of basic skills instruction in reading, writing and mathematics. Some can read a paragraph but cannot understand the meaning of the words, while others can write an essay but do not comprehend the proper structure. Then there are those who are proficient at college-level reading and writing, but cannot add square roots or solve a basic linear equation. Experts call that a recipe for disaster.

Certification for teaching 2nd language under debate

The Journal Gazette - Jeanne Taylor is old school in the education world. The Franke Park Elementary teacher has traveled around the world teaching children English and to figure out the best ways for them to learn.

She taught children in Taiwan and later traveled to refugee camps from Thailand to the Philippines to pick up teaching skills she could bring back to her Fort Wayne classroom to help her own foreign students learn her language.

The 30-year veteran is now entrusted with helping students learn to read and write in a language they’ve never spoken.

Her degree in education allows her to teach limited-English-speaking students, but Taylor does not hold a specialty license in teaching English as a New Language and has never completed the college courses required to achieve that certification.

ESL students speak in future tense

Juli Salatino’s third-period class is a bit different from her others.

Her portable classroom at Davis High School, generally filled with teenagers learning Spanish, is instead occupied by a variety of students working through English verbs and sentence structure.

This is her English as a Second Language, or ESL, class. And, for these non-native English-speakers, it’s extremely important.

“We don’t know anything about this country,” Liliana Saénz says in English, her second language. The 20-year-old native Spanish speaker recently came to the United States from Mexico. “We have a different culture and language, but ESL class helps us to learn more.”

Also speaking in English, her second language, fellow classmate and native Spanish speaker, 21-year-old Adriana Carranza, says the ESL class is important so “we can learn the language and have a better future.”

ESL 3, however, is only one period, leaving five more classes for Saénz and Carranza to tackle in their second language.

“At first, they start with two ESL classes with limited core classes like art and P.E.,” their teacher explains. “Then, they will move into classes that require more cognitive skills, like math, science and social studies. By ESL 3, though, they are completely mainstreamed.”

Students learn about traditions, share dishes. Parents and students in the English as a Second Language program reflected on how the pilgrims’ voyage to America is much like their own.
“It takes all kinds of people to make up a great country like America,” one student declared during a skit.
The group had gathered in the portable buildings of Edgar Martin Middle School to celebrate an international Thanksgiving.
The morning was filled with skits, a powerpoint presentation about the ESL group, prayers in three different languages and food provided by the 42 participating students.

TEACHER WANTED: Nice Apt, Pyeongchon (Seoul), START February 1st

By:eslstarter <Send E-Mail>
Date: 23 November 2008
We have a great position available in Pyeongchon, close to Seoul. This is a very lively area with lots of hagwons and so a large and welcoming foreign community. There are many international restaurants and bars in Pyeongchon making it a great place to meet friends and spend a year. Pyeongchon Station is located on Seoul subway line 4 and it takes around 30 minutes to reach Gangnam from here.

For more on Pyeongchon, visit:
http://wiki.galbijim.com/Pyeongchon

- 2.3 million won/month base pay (more with experience/certification)
- 120 hours/month (the hours will be 10-12, 1-6.30, M-F, beginning in February)
- 12-Month contract with standard benefits for both parties (50/50 medical insurance, housing, round-trip airfare, all Korean holidays off, one-month salary bonus upon contract completion)
- Two one-work week vacations (one late summer, one winter)
- This school teaches English immersion kindergarten in the morning (i.e. subjects include phonics, science, geography, song, “fun time,” park days on Wednesdays, etc.), and early elementary in the afternoon

Two of the best attributes of our director is that she sticks to the contract very well, and always pays on time – if not the day before when payday falls on a weekend or holiday. Previous teachers have stayed for up to three years. One perk of the job is that in addition to normal short breaks, there is currently a system in which you get either a one or one and-a-half-hour break at some point during the week, and sometimes two such breaks. There is almost never any lesson-planning/administrative work outside of the working day.

The apartment is spacious, furnished, and has a queen-size bed, A/C, large, modern television with basic cable (upgradable), high-speed internet connection, washing machine and two (slightly-smaller than American-size) refrigerators. The apartment and school are located in the “Pyeongchon Food Court” (they meant to say “restaurant district” on the signs), so it is only a five-minute walk from your door to the school and surrounded by tons of good Korean food. This area has a lot of foreign teachers so you’ll see many walking around and also many of the local shopkeepers/restaurant workers speak some English.

This is a nice area because it is well connected to greater Seoul (30-40 minutes to downtown), but is still far enough away to have better air-quality, local hiking, two large parks within five-minute walking-distance, good grocery shopping and is close to downtown Anyang (Pyeongchon is part of Anyang City).

We can offer excellent references for the school from the 5 teachers we have previously placed there; Katy, Dan, Rhamen, John, and Elaine!

“Claire and Phil (Eslstarter) placed me at a wonderful little school in Korea.” Katy, previous teacher.

“My time here has been fulfilling and enjoyable.” Dan, previous teacher.
